Public Voices, Private Lives: American Women Poets of the 1960's and 1970's

This seminar is a study of five American women poets who were influential voices in the late1960’s and early 1970’s, the era of the Vietnam War and the rise of feminist movement. Our focus will be on the work written by these poets during that era. We’ll talk about questions such as: What topics and themes did these poets choose? Do poets have a moral responsibility to write poems of witness/protest, or is the only obligation to write with truth about one’s own experience and vision? Is the sphere of domestic life and children “natural” for women, while other topics are better suited to men? What forms and other techniques did these poets use, and did their use evolve over time? During our explorations, we’ll think about ways we can learn from the poetic journeys of these great American voices, and try writing a poem or two inspired by their work. In addition to the reading for class discussion, each student will read and report on the most recent book by one of the poets. The sixth session will be set aside for wrap-up and sharing poems.
